Thucydides, in the opinion of many the greatest historian of the ancient world, wrote a history of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta in the late Fifth Century BC. He not only described the events of the war with rigorous accuracy, but gave us perceptive insights into the behaviour of both states and individuals in the context of a brutal and destructive civil war.
